Network, AV & Security Upgrade During Renovation – Terranova, Arabian Ranches

Full Technology Upgrade During Renovation: Terranova, Arabian Ranches

A Terranova villa renovation gave us the opportunity to redesign the home's technology from scratch. The resulting system: a fully managed UniFi network with integrated security cameras, high-performance Anthem/Paradigm surround audio in the main living areas, and WiiM-powered Focal multi-room audio for the rest of the home.

UniFi: A Unified Ecosystem for WiFi and Cameras

Two of the most common approaches to home security in the UAE are: buying cheap cameras on Amazon and plugging them into a Hikvision DVR, or using a separate purpose-built CCTV brand with its own app and management system. Both approaches work, but they create fragmentation — a separate app for the cameras, separate hardware to maintain, and no integration with the network layer.

For the Terranova villa, we specified Ubiquiti's UniFi Protect platform, which integrates cameras directly into the same ecosystem as the UniFi network infrastructure. The practical outcome: one app for both the WiFi network management and the security cameras, a single NVR (the UniFi Dream Machine Pro) storing camera footage locally without subscription fees, and cameras that are managed with the same firmware update cadence as the access points.

UniFi Protect cameras are PoE-powered — each camera is connected via a single Cat6 cable that simultaneously carries data and electrical power from the switch. This eliminates separate power supplies at each camera location and means our camera cabling run during the renovation's first-fix phase was a single Cat6 cable per camera — no separate power cable required. External cameras cover the villa perimeter including the entrance gate, driveway, and garden. An internal camera provides general monitoring of the main living area. All footage is retained on-site on the Dream Machine's internal storage.

Audio Architecture: Two Tiers for Two Uses

The audio specification for this villa reflects a thoughtful distinction between two very different use cases. In the main living areas — the family sitting room and the TV lounge — the requirement is high-performance TV audio that makes watching films a genuinely cinematic experience. In the secondary rooms — guest rooms, the kitchen, the study — the requirement is casual background music, streaming any source conveniently via an app.

These are fundamentally different acoustic briefs, and we specified different equipment for each. The main living areas received Anthem MRX Slim receivers — compact, audiophile-grade multi-channel processors — paired with Paradigm Millenia soundbars for front channels and subwoofers for bass extension. The rear channels were filled with Focal ceiling speakers embedded in the ceiling during the first-fix cabling phase, completing a proper surround audio presentation.

Anthem is a Canadian audio brand producing some of the best-performing home cinema processors in the market. The MRX Slim's Anthem Room Correction (ARC) technology is particularly relevant in a UAE villa context: it uses a measurement microphone to analyse the acoustic characteristics of the specific room and then automatically applies EQ corrections to compensate. In a large open-plan living area with reflective marble floors and high ceilings — a common UAE interior design choice — ARC makes a significant difference to the perceived clarity and balance of the audio.

The secondary rooms use WiiM Pro Plus amplifiers — an entirely different proposition. WiiM amps are excellent value streaming devices that support AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, and TIDAL Connect, making them incredibly versatile for casual whole-home audio use. Paired with Focal 100 ICA architectural ceiling speakers, they deliver pleasant, well-balanced background music that's controlled entirely from a smartphone. No dedicated remote control, no complicated programming — just a streaming app.

Planning a Renovation?

Whether you need WiFi, audio, security cameras, or all three — the best time to design and install technology is during a renovation, before the walls close.

The Brief

The renovation created an opportunity to design and install all technology cleanly during the build phase, rather than retrofitting into a finished villa.

WiFi, Network & Security

A fully managed UniFi ecosystem was specified for both the network/WiFi layer and the CCTV security layer — one platform, unified management.

How We Delivered It

Installation phased with the renovation programme, starting with first-fix cabling and completing with system commissioning and client handover.

1

Design & Planning

Specified all equipment, drew the cabling plan aligned with the architect's drawings, and coordinated timings with the main contractor.

2

First Fix Cabling

Installed all Ethernet, speaker, and HDMI cabling while walls were open during the structural phase.

3

Hardware Installation

Mounted APs, cameras, audio equipment, and installed the UniFi core during the second fix phase.

4

Commissioning & Handover

Configured all systems, tested full coverage and audio performance, and walked the client through all controls.

Common Questions

Why is renovation the best time to upgrade technology?

Open walls provide the only clean opportunity to install structured cabling inside the structure. First-fix cabling during the renovation is far cheaper and cleaner than channelling through finished plaster after completion.

What is the difference between Anthem and WiiM audio?

Anthem is a high-performance home cinema processor brand producing audiophile-grade multi-channel amplification with room correction. WiiM is a streaming-focused streaming amplifier that excels at convenient, app-controlled background music zones. Both have their place — different rooms, different requirements.

Does UniFi Protect require a monthly subscription?

No. UniFi Protect stores footage locally on the Dream Machine's internal storage — no cloud subscription fees. Remote access is included. You own and control your camera footage entirely.
