Anthem MRX Slim: Serious Performance in a Compact Format

The Anthem MRX Slim is the product of a deliberate engineering decision by Anthem — a Canadian audiophile brand — to make their high-performance AV receiver technology available in a slim form factor compatible with furniture AV cabinets and media walls. In a one-bedroom apartment where floor space and rack depth are at a premium, this is the ideal compromise: you get an audiophile-calibre processor without requiring a full-height AV rack.

The product that makes Anthem genuinely differentiated from competitors at its price point is its proprietary room correction technology: Anthem Room Correction (ARC). Where other receivers use generic room correction algorithms, ARC uses a measurement microphone placed at multiple positions in the room to build an acoustic model of the specific space. It then calculates precise EQ compensation curves for each speaker channel to account for the acoustic anomalies of that room — reflections from the marble floor, bass buildup near the walls, the way the ceiling height affects the soundfield.

In a typical Dubai Hills apartment — marble floors, high ceilings, minimal soft furnishings — the acoustic environment is challenging. Sound reflects heavily off hard surfaces, creating smeared transients and muddy bass. ARC's calibration made a measurable and audible difference: the post-calibration listening experience was significantly cleaner and more balanced than the uncalibrated output, even with the same hardware.

Focal In-Wall Speakers: Architectural Audio at the Performance Level

Focal, the French speaker manufacturer, produces an architectural speaker range specifically intended for in-wall and in-ceiling installation in AV systems driven by high-performance processors like the Anthem MRX Slim. Unlike budget architectural speakers that use simple driver designs to keep costs down, Focal's architectural range uses the same driver technology as their freestanding speaker products — the same fiberglass composite cones, same tweeter designs, same crossover engineering — in an in-wall format.

For the front left and right channels, we used in-wall speakers integrated into the custom media wall's frame structure, positioned exactly where a traditional floorstanding speaker would be — left and right of the TV, at matched height. For the rear surround channels, ceiling-mounted Focal speakers were installed above the primary seating position, creating a proper overhead element to the surround presentation.

The bass channel uses a Focal Sub Air — a wireless subwoofer that receives its audio signal via a proprietary RF wireless connection from the Anthem receiver's subwoofer output. This was specifically chosen because placing a traditional cabled subwoofer in an apartment living room creates cable-management challenges in a space with no floor space to hide a rear cable run. The Sub Air is positioned in the most acoustically optimal location without any cable constraint.

Balcony Audio: B&W AM-1 and WiiM

The Bowers & Wilkins AM-1 is one of the benchmark products in the outdoor architectural speaker category. It uses an aluminium die-cast body with a UV-resistant finish, stainless steel fixings, and a driver assembly that is both weatherproof and acoustically transparent in all directions — making it suitable for flush mounting on a balcony wall or railing with consistent sound dispersion regardless of listening position.

The AM-1's driver quality is noticeably superior to most competing outdoor architectural speakers at its price point. The high-frequency extension is clean and detailed — particularly important for background music and speech in outdoor environments where ambient noise competes with the direct audio signal. Two AM-1 units on the balcony create a wide stereo presentation covering the full balcony depth without requiring the volume to be raised excessively.

They're driven by a WiiM Pro Plus streaming amplifier — a compact, highly capable streaming device supporting AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, and Bluetooth simultaneously. The WiiM runs as an independent zone from the main indoor system, so the client can have the indoor surround system playing a film while streaming music to the balcony at a different volume — managed entirely from the respective app.
