Why Identical Villas Need Different WiFi: Meydan South

Meydan South is a development of near-identical multi-storey villas. Same floorplan, same walls, same cable routes. But we've delivered four completely different WiFi systems across four villas in this development — because the right solution depends not on the building, but on the people inside it.

Project Summary

Four Meydan South villa deployments: 1) Alta Labs + Firewalla (security-focused). 2) Alta Labs Route10 (performance-focused). 3) Alta Labs + parental controls (family). 4) Firewalla + 2.5Gb switch + smart-home VLANs (power user).

The Common Challenge

All four Meydan South villas shared the same underlying physical challenges — but had completely different technology requirements.

Multi-Floor Concrete Construction

Meydan South's multi-storey villas have dense concrete floors and walls that attenuate WiFi signals significantly. ISP routers installed in utility cupboards can't serve the upper floors reliably.

  • Concrete signal attenuation
  • ISP router in utility cupboard
  • Dead zones on upper floors
The physical challenge

Different Household Priorities

Despite identical buildings, clients ranged from a security-focused single professional to a large family with teenagers — requiring fundamentally different network architecture.

  • Security, VPN, and firewall needs varied
  • Family with parental control requirements
  • Power user with smart-home expansion plans
The four solutions

Four Solutions for Four Households

Same villa, different networks — each designed around how the household actually uses the internet.

Security-Focused WiFi

Alta Labs WiFi 6 APs with a Firewalla Gold for enterprise-level network security, VPN access, and traffic monitoring.

  • Alta Labs WiFi 6 (×4)
  • Firewalla Gold firewall/router
  • VPN and traffic monitoring
Security-first approach

Performance & Family Networks

From a clean performance-focused deployment to a full 2.5Gb power-user network with smart-home VLAN segmentation.

  • Alta Labs Route10 router
  • 5-AP layout for family home
  • 2.5Gb switch + IoT VLANs
Performance and family builds

Consistent Results, Different Paths

All four deployments eliminated dead zones and delivered seamless roaming — each optimised for a different household.

1

Site Survey

Each villa received a standalone survey — confirming the AP locations and cable routing, and understanding the household's priorities.

2

Hardware Selection

Equipment specified per household: security-first clients got Firewalla, performance-focused got Route10, power users got 2.5Gb switching.

3

Installation

Ethernet backhaul run to each AP location. Switch and router installed in the network cabinet. Full configuration completed on-site.

4

Handover

Each client received a full walkthrough of their specific system — app access, guest network management, and features relevant to their deployment.

Why Meydan South Villas Struggle with WiFi

Meydan South villas are mid-rise residential properties — typically three floors with concrete construction throughout. UAE residential building standards call for reinforced concrete structural elements in villa-scale properties, which means the walls between floors and rooms contain enough rebar and concrete mass to significantly reduce WiFi signal strength between storeys.

The ISP-installed router is typically positioned in a network cabinet or utility cupboard on the ground floor. From that location, the router's signal must penetrate through a concrete ceiling to reach the first floor, and a second ceiling to reach the second floor. By the time it arrives in a second-floor bedroom, the signal has been attenuated to a level that supports basic browsing but fails under any load — streaming, video calls, gaming, and multiple concurrent devices all cause visible performance degradation.

Solution 1: Security-Focused WiFi with Firewalla Gold

The first client was an IT professional who immediately identified that the ISP-provided router had been misconfigured and lacked basic security features. Their requirements were specific: enterprise-grade firewall capability, VPN for remote access to the home network (for managing home devices when travelling), traffic monitoring to see what devices and apps were consuming bandwidth, and a future-proof platform capable of expansion.

We replaced the ISP router with a Firewalla Gold — a dedicated network security and management device designed for prosumer and professional home users. Firewalla Gold functions as both a router and a deep-packet inspection security device. It identifies device categories on the network automatically (IoT devices, computers, phones), supports VLAN segmentation to isolate device groups, provides intrusion detection, and enables a professional-grade VPN server without needing any external subscription.

The WiFi layer was handled by four Alta Labs WiFi 6 access points on wired Ethernet backhaul, covering all three floors. Alta Labs was chosen for its clean minimal aesthetic and excellent controller software — the access points are managed from the same Alta controller interface, providing channel planning and load balancing across the villa.

Solutions 2–4: Performance, Family, and Power User

The second client's requirement was simpler: excellent WiFi everywhere, easy to use, no complexity. We deployed the Alta Labs Route10 — Alta's high-performance router — as the core, combined with four WiFi 6 access points. No Firewalla, no VLANs, no complexity. Just clean, fast, reliable coverage. The Route10 is a capable router platform with a intuitive management app, making it well-suited to clients who want performance without managing router configurations.

The third Meydan South deployment was for a family with three children. The specific requirements: strong coverage in every bedroom, a reliable guest network for visitors, and parental controls. We increased the AP count to five (one per bedroom, one for the ground floor, one for the main living areas) and used the Alta Labs platform's built-in VLAN and scheduling features to create separate networks per device group. Children's devices were assigned to a network with scheduled internet hours — internet automatically pausing at the configured bedtime — while the parents' devices and guest network operated independently.

The fourth deployment was for a technically-minded homeowner planning significant smart-home expansion. Their network needed to support hard-wired gaming and media devices (via Ethernet ports in the living room and study), a dedicated VLAN for IoT/smart-home devices isolated from personal computers and phones, and future readiness for AV-over-IP expansion. We specified a 16-port PoE switch with 2.5Gb uplinks — providing the headroom for future high-bandwidth applications — with Firewalla Gold handling routing, firewall, and VPN in a mixed Alta Labs and wired deployment.
