UniFi Protect - Camera Platform Deep Dive

UniFi Protect is a locally hosted camera platform that runs on UniFi OS hardware. It is our default recommendation when we control the camera design and cabling.

What is UniFi Protect?

UniFi Protect is a locally hosted camera platform that runs on UniFi OS hardware such as Cloud Keys, UniFi Gateways, and dedicated NVRs. It is designed to integrate tightly with UniFi networking and access control.

Key Characteristics

  • Local-first recording with no mandatory cloud dependency
  • No per-camera licensing fees
  • Centralised management via UniFi OS
  • Clean web and mobile interfaces
  • Tight integration with UniFi Access

Typical Use Cases

  • Residential villas (planned installations)
  • Offices and commercial environments
  • Retail and hospitality
  • Sites already using UniFi networking
UniFi Protect is generally our default recommendation when we control the camera design and cabling. If a property already has good non-UniFi cameras, a platform like Synology Surveillance Station can be a better fit.

Design Considerations

  • Dedicated VLANs for cameras are recommended
  • PoE budgets must be planned correctly
  • Camera traffic should not compete with user traffic
  • Secure remote access must be configured correctly

Renovation vs Retrofit

UniFi Protect is best deployed as part of a renovation or new build, where cabling and infrastructure can be planned properly. These systems rely on:

  • Ethernet cabling to camera locations
  • PoE-capable network switching
  • A suitable location for network and storage hardware

In fully finished properties, retrofitting UniFi Protect can be challenging. It is not viable unless the client is willing to undertake civil works, allow surface trunking, or carry out patching and repainting.

Limitations

  • UniFi Protect only supports UniFi cameras
  • Storage is tied to UniFi hardware
  • Advanced analytics vary by camera model
