WiFi, Audio & Home Cinema During Renovation: Al Furjan Villa

An Al Furjan villa renovation gave this client the chance to properly integrate technology from the ground up. The result: whole-home WiFi on wired backhaul, WiiM-powered multi-room audio with Vocal ceiling speakers, Paradigm rock speakers discreetly installed in the garden, and a dedicated compact cinema room with Anthem MRX 740, Sony projector, and Bowers & Wilkins in-wall speakers.

Project Summary

Al Furjan villa renovation. Whole-home enterprise WiFi. Vocal ceiling speakers + WiiM Amps (multi-room). Paradigm garden rocks + WiiM (outdoor). Anthem MRX 740 + Sony projector + B&W in-wall (cinema).

The Opportunity

A villa renovation is the optimal time to integrate technology — walls are open, cabling runs are clean, and the finished result looks completely factory-spec.

WiFi & Multi-Room Audio

The client wanted whole-home WiFi and high-quality audio in every main room, as well as a dedicated outdoor audio zone for the garden — all controlled simply from a phone.

From WiFi infrastructure to home cinema, we integrate everything cleanly during the build.

Whole-Home WiFi: The Network Backbone

Every other system in this villa depends on a reliable network. The audio zones require stable connectivity for streaming. The cinema room's smart device integration requires low-latency network access. Cameras (if added later) require sufficient bandwidth for multiple streams. Designing the WiFi correctly at the outset means all of this works without revisiting the infrastructure later.

For the Al Furjan villa, we installed enterprise-grade access points on wired Ethernet backhaul throughout the property. Unlike consumer mesh systems that relay traffic wirelessly from node to node, every AP in this installation is connected directly to the central switch via its own dedicated Cat6 cable run — completed during the first-fix cabling phase when the walls were open. Each AP operates at full speed independently, with no wireless backhaul penalty.

The AP placement was designed to provide full coverage of each floor with a 20% overlap between adjacent unit coverage areas — enough for uninterrupted roaming as devices move through the property, without the RF interference that comes from excessive overlap. The result is a network that handles all the villa's connected devices simultaneously without noticeable performance degradation.

Multi-Room Audio: Vocal Ceiling Speakers and WiiM Amplifiers

The indoor multi-room audio system uses architectural ceiling speakers paired with WiiM streaming amplifiers. Each zone — the living room, dining area, kitchen, and master bedroom — has its own pair of Vocal ceiling speakers and a dedicated WiiM amp, making it an independent zone. The family can stream different music in different rooms simultaneously, or group all rooms to the same source for large gatherings.

WiiM has rapidly become our preferred multi-room streaming amp for residential deployments where Sonos isn't the brief. The platform supports AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music, and Bluetooth — effectively every significant streaming protocol. Any iOS or Android device in the family can control any WiiM zone without needing to install anything beyond a single app. The streaming quality is excellent: the WiiM Pro Plus model we use in most installations supports FLAC and hi-res audio up to 24-bit 192kHz, beyond the threshold of audible difference for most listeners.

The garden audio uses Paradigm landscape speakers — the "rock" form factor. These are speakers designed to be placed in a garden and disguised as decorative rocks or boulders, providing omnidirectional sound coverage in outdoor spaces without any visible hardware that breaks the garden aesthetic. Paradigm's landscape range uses weatherproof driver materials rated for sustained outdoor exposure and delivers a warm, full-frequency sound profile well matched to garden entertaining use. Driven by a dedicated WiiM amp in the AV cabinet, they are independently controlled at any volume without needing the indoor audio zones to be active.

The Compact Cinema Room: Anthem MRX 740 and Sony Projector

Compact cinema rooms are a recurring brief in Dubai villas. A spare bedroom — typically 12-15 square metres — is converted into a dedicated screening room, with a projector screen on the main wall and full surround sound. The challenge is delivering real home cinema quality in a relatively small room without overwhelming it acoustically or visually.

The projector specified for this installation is a Sony 4K laser model. Sony's home cinema projectors dominate the premium segment for a clear reason: their proprietary SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) projection technology delivers exceptional contrast ratios and colour accuracy. The laser light source eliminates the lamp degradation that affected older projectors — there is no lamp to replace, and the image quality remains consistent throughout the unit's operational life. At a 3-metre throw distance in this room, the projected image covers the full wall at 120 inches diagonal with excellent brightness.

The Anthem MRX 740 receiver provides the audio processing and amplification. Unlike the Slim model used in space-constrained apartment installations, the MRX 740 is a full-featured 7-channel receiver with Anthem's proprietary ARC (Anthem Room Correction) technology. In a small to medium cinema room, room correction is particularly valuable: at 12-15 square metres, standing acoustic waves create significant bass modal reinforcement at certain frequencies, and the room's parallel walls cause flutter echoes. ARC's measurement-based correction substantially mitigates these issues, producing a much more balanced and accurate sound presentation than the uncorrected room.

The speaker installation uses Bowers & Wilkins in-wall speakers for the front left, centre, and right channels, with ceiling speakers for the rear surround positions. B&W's in-wall range uses the same drivers as their freestanding architectural speakers but configured for in-wall installation, delivering high-frequency extension and imaging precision that significantly outperforms competing in-wall brands at their respective price points.
