The microphone array listens from multiple directions simultaneously, but uses machine learning to identify and enhance the direction of the active speaker while aggressively suppressing signals from other directions and identifying non-speech sounds (HVAC hum, keyboard clicks) for elimination.
AI Beamforming: The Technical Detail
Traditional microphones either capture one direction (cardioid) or all directions (omnidirectional). The A40 uses a phased array of microphones that sample the audio field simultaneously. The AI firmware calculates the time-of-arrival differences between each microphone element to mathematically identify the direction of any given sound source.
This allows it to dynamically "steer" a focused pickup beam towards whoever is speaking — even as they move or turn — while attenuating all other signals. When combined with acoustic echo cancellation (preventing the speakers' output from feeding back into the microphones), the result is remarkable clarity.
