The Major Renovation: Control4 & Lutron in a JGE Villa
This is one of the most comprehensive smart home projects we are currently delivering in Jumeirah Golf Estates — a full villa renovation providing the opportunity to install structured cabling and integrate systems from the ground up rather than retrofitting into a finished property.
The client's brief was focused and clear: they wanted robust centralised control across the villa, reliable WiFi everywhere, and serious lighting control with physical keypads. They were not interested in distributed audio — the brief was explicitly about control, reliability, and lighting quality. This clarity made specification straightforward.
Control4: The Case for Dedicated Smart Home Control
Control4 is an enterprise smart home platform designed for professional installation. Unlike consumer smart home products (Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Echo) that are designed for self-setup and consumer-grade reliability, Control4 runs on dedicated local hardware — no cloud dependency for core functions — and is programmed by certified dealers.
For this villa, we specified Control4 touchscreens positioned throughout the property. Each touchscreen provides a consistent, intuitive interface for lighting scene selection, climate control, and AV management. The touchscreens are particularly valuable in a UAE context: in a large villa, having a physical control point in each main room eliminates the friction of always reaching for a smartphone app — particularly important for household staff and visiting family members.
Control4's programming allows us to create sophisticated scenes — "Morning" raises the bedroom blinds and sets the lighting to a gentle ramp, "Entertaining" sets the living room to a specific ambience and activates the AV system — that can be triggered from any touchscreen, the app, or a doorbell action. The programming is carried out by our team during commissioning and can be updated remotely as the client's preferences evolve.
Lutron RA2: Why It's the Professional Standard
Lutron has been the professional lighting control standard for decades. The RA2 Select system (Lutron's primary specification for residential villas) uses a combination of a central hub, inline dimmer modules, and wireless Pico or 6-button keypads. Unlike consumer smart lighting platforms that use Zigbee or Z-Wave mesh protocols, Lutron uses its proprietary Clear Connect RF protocol — specifically engineered for zero-interference lighting control.
In practice, this means Lutron keypads have an extraordinarily high response reliability. When a family member presses a Lutron 6-button keypad, the lighting responds in under 50 milliseconds, every time, without the occasional hesitation that plagues consumer alternatives. For living spaces that a family inhabits daily, this reliability makes a significant difference to perceived quality.
Second Villa: Network Modernisation & Managed Support
The second JGE property in this family's portfolio had an existing network that had not been reviewed or maintained since installation. Over the years, firmware had fallen behind, hardware had been added ad-hoc without proper planning, and performance had degraded. The family's approach to technology management — calling someone when something breaks — was reactive rather than proactive.
We began with a full audit of the existing installation: assessing firmware versions, checking hardware specifications, reviewing network configuration for security vulnerabilities, and mapping the current infrastructure. Where hardware was outdated or misconfigured, we updated it. Where configuration was suboptimal, we corrected it. We then moved the entire network under our managed support platform — meaning we now proactively monitor the system, apply updates during low-traffic periods, and receive alerts if any device goes offline before the client notices.
