Firewalla - Advanced Security & VPN

Firewalla provides professional-grade security, parental controls, and VPN capabilities for home networks. It is our preferred platform for clients who need granular control over their network traffic.

VPN Setup on Firewalla

This guide shows how to set up an OpenVPN client on Firewalla so you can route selected devices through a VPN service.

Note: Firewalla VPN Client is not available in Transparent Bridge Mode.

Protocol Recommendations

  • PureVPN: WireGuard (fastest and most stable)
  • NordVPN: OpenVPN (best supported on routers)
  • Proton VPN: WireGuard (fast, clean routing)

Step-by-Step Setup

Create Connection

Open the Firewalla app, select VPN Client > Create VPN Connection > 3rd-Party VPN > OpenVPN.

Import Profile

Import the .ovpn profile from your provider and enter your service credentials (not your app login).

Select Devices

Assign the VPN to specific devices, groups, or VLANs. Ensure devices are in the Firewalla overlay network.

Connect

Toggle the connection On. Status should show Connected.

Quick Checks

  • Firewalla VPN Client does not support IPv6 (IPv6 traffic is blocked when VPN is on).
  • If the .ovpn file has multiple remote lines, keep only one.
  • If VPN connects but apps fail, try a different server or location.

Support is provided on a best-effort basis. We cannot warranty third-party equipment, existing cabling, or prior workmanship.
