Firewalla VPN Setup Guide

This is the implementation route for setting up an OpenVPN client on Firewalla so you can route selected devices through a VPN service after the platform decision is already made.

Note: Firewalla VPN Client is not available in Transparent Bridge Mode.

Setup Steps

Use this page for implementation only after you have already chosen Firewalla as the right platform.

1

Create a VPN Connection

Open the Firewalla app, tap VPN Client, then + Create VPN Connection. Choose 3rd-Party VPN, select OpenVPN, and import your .ovpn profile. Enter the VPN service credentials (often different from your app login) and save.

2

Select Devices

Devices must be in the Firewalla overlay network or in router mode. In DHCP mode, devices are already in the overlay. In Simple mode, assign a static IP. Assign the VPN to a specific device or a device group/VLAN.

3

Connect to the VPN

From VPN Client, toggle the connection On. Or from a device or group, choose the VPN profile. Status should show Connected.

Quick Checks

  • Firewalla VPN Client does not support IPv6 (IPv6 traffic is blocked when VPN is on)
  • If the .ovpn file has multiple remote lines, keep only one
  • If VPN connects but apps fail, try a different server or location

Need Help Now?

Use diagnostics for a failing setup, or return to the selection route if you still need to confirm whether Firewalla is the right platform.

Need help after following the Firewalla VPN setup guide?

We can configure VPN on your Firewalla as part of an installation or support visit. If the VPN was working and has failed, use diagnostics before escalating to a booking.
